New Church in Abita Springs

Posted: December 31, 2020 in Church, Church Planting

As the new year begins, we sense that the timing is right to announce that the Lord has led Gayla and me — along with several other committed individuals — to plant SweetWater Church in Abita Springs. When I first accepted our first pastorate a little more than 38 years ago, we had no idea the different places and roads we would travel. After serving three churches in Texas, God called us to Mandeville where we would invest more than 23 years in one church.

Once that chapter of our ministry came to close three years ago, God continued preparing us. In addition to the responsibilities I had with the church multiplication team with the Northshore Baptist Association, the Lord led me to become involved with Child Evangelism Fellowship, an international ministry seeking to bring the gospel to children. With my undergraduate work in education and my relationship with several of our community’s high school principals, I became a substitute school teacher. A couple of years ago, I took a permanent position at Fontainebleau Junior High as a science teacher. (Yes, I said “science teacher.”) And for the past two-and-a-half years, I have served as transitional pastor at Ebenezer Baptist Church of Hammond. Gayla and I are so grateful that the Lord saw fit to call us to this church, where He used this time to position us, heal us, and train us further.

Within the next few weeks, we hope to begin having some Bible fellowship groups forming so that we share our vision for SweetWater Church. We believe that the Lord desires for SweetWater Church to be a vibrant fellowship that reaches new believers with the life-changing gospel. Our members will possess a maturity in Christ because they devote themselves to Him and His Word and dedicate themselves to caring for one another. This will lead them to have a passion to minister to their friends and neighbors so that they can lead them to faith in Christ.

We see SweetWater Church looking for a variety of ways to interact with people in our Abita Springs through activities, community events, and group gatherings. Our Sunday gatherings will focus on worshiping God and fellowshipping with and equipping people so that we can advance Christ’s work through our living out the gospel in the workplace and our neighborhoods.

    • Thanks for praying for us. This little town does not have a strong evangelical witness, and we hope that the Lord will bless this effort to reach souls for His Kingdom!

Chris and I will be praying! Looking forward to visiting one day! Blessings!
